HuiZero is a reusable food containers and zero waste local restaurant program. There are over 40 local restaurants participating thus far.
Did you know? Most of the time even compostable containers just end up in the landfill while paper or cardboard containers with no plastic liner can be composted in a backyard compost. Bioplastics will only break down in an industrial composting facility which Maui does not have. HuiZero’s co-owners – Kevin Watkins II founder of Maui Sustainable Solutions aka PlasticFreeMaui and Alexa Caskey owner of Moku Roots, a farm-table-farm and zero waste restaurant in Lahaina – thought there must be a better solution. Their customers agree.
HuiZero allows you to continue getting your takeout anytime, consume it where you like and elevate the quality by using a different kind of container that’s zero waste and all ALOHA. Their business also provides catering solutions for events and festivals, for Maui events that wish to have a zero waste alternative for their guests. They are also looking to add a reusable cup program with their restaurant partners this year, and looking to expand their expand their business statewide in the near future.
“Our HuiZero program allows our residents and guests to go zero waste easily while supporting local restaurants,” said Kevin. “Maui deserves to be protected. The single use plastic problem has been considerably improved in Maui with the single use plastic ban implemented in 2022. Additionally, we are proud to be official partners of Maui County’s Environmental Management Environmental Protection and Sustainability Division.”
“We wholesale the reusable food containers to restaurants and retailers across Maui,” said Alexa. “New customers can visit our website to find a comprehensive list of participating locations. If a business would like to join our program, they can also visit our website, email or call us.”
