Maui Humane Society: A Haven of Compassion and Urgent Need for Fosters

December 22, 2023

Nestled within the heart of Maui County, Maui Humane Society was established in 1953. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, this shelter embodies the spirit of aloha, dedicated to protecting and nurturing the lives of Maui’s beloved creatures.

Their mission is clear and resounding: To protect and save the lives of Maui’s animals, accepting all in need, educating the community, and inspiring respect and compassion towards all animals.

However, amidst their noble efforts and like many shelters nation-wide, MHS urgently needs the public's help to clear kennel space. The shelter is stretched beyond its limits with capacity in their dog kennels rising above 100% and more than 60 dogs in a space meant for 40. MHS is calling for fosters to alleviate this strain by activating "SOS Foster," which declares the shelter's urgent need for the community's help.

The message: "When you foster one dog, you open a kennel for another in critical need. No prior fostering experience? No problem! Come to the shelter Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We'll find the perfect fit for your family and provide everything you need, free of charge."

Cultivating collaboration and innovation, the organization's pioneering programs not only save lives but also elevate the quality and accessibility of animal welfare services across Maui. MHS operates on the dedication of exceptional staff who are passionate and committed to their mission, and acknowledges the invaluable contribution of caring volunteers and generous donors. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the shelter, contributing their time, love, and expertise to ensure the well-being of these animals. Their dedication enriches the lives of shelter residents and facilitates the shelter's operations, making a profound impact on Maui's animal community. View video

Furthermore, donors play a pivotal role in sustaining the shelter's mission. Their contributions fuel the shelter's daily operations and lifesaving programs, such as the Hope Fund, which enables life-saving medical treatments and procedures beyond conventional care. This support allows the organization to expand programs, such as the Wings of Aloha transfer initiative, saving the lives of countless animals by placing them in adoption-guaranteed care on the Mainland.

Maui Humane Society extends its commitment beyond the shelter, collaborating for year-round spay/neuter services, emergency response, and Humane Enforcement management for Maui County. Their dedication to education is evident in their collaboration with schools and community organizations, as they aim to equip Maui’s residents with the knowledge to advocate for animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Their mission to treat both people and animals with deep respect, kindness, and aloha is evident in the tender care every shelter animal receives, whether it’s reuniting families, finding perfect matches, or offering compassionate farewells.

Maui Humane Society is more than a shelter; it’s a sanctuary where compassion thrives, transforming lives and embodying the true spirit of aloha.
